Keeping newborn lambs alive and healthy is one of the greatest management challenges facing sheep producers. An important strategy in meeting this challenge is making sure that lambs receive adequate colostrum during the first 2 or 3 hours of life.

Common lambing problems and hints in dealing with them are discussed.

Proper care of the ewe in mid to late pregnancy and care of the lamb in the first few hours are the essential components of ensuring a healthy lamb crop. Vaccination and supplementation of the ewe are also efficient ways of ensuring the health of the lamb.
