Formed in 1957 at the AVRO factory at Woodford, the Unit, consisting of less than a dozen Officers and NCO's of the RAF was sent out to Edinburgh Air Field near Elizabeth - South Australia to carry out trials on the, then new, guided missile (Blue Steel), which was to be carried by the Avro Vulcan bomber.
